After several years of fundraising, Slate Creek Elementary school has an inclusive playground where all children can play together, regardless of abilities.
The All Together Now playground was a concept dreamed up by Slate Creek students who noticed their peers with mobility devices, such as wheelchairs or walkers, were unable to play alongside their typically-developing peers.
With no promises of trinkets or physical prizes, Slate Creek staff and students raised $20,000 on their own. Incentives included experiences, like taping a teacher to the wall, having the School Resource Officer do a funny dance, and Principal Tenae Alfaro eating an insect.
A sub-group of the Slate Creek PTO, the All Together Now committee, fundraised for just over a year, seeking donations from public and private partners to donate to the cost of the over $800,000 playground.
The cost for the playground is higher than normal playgrounds because the surface is poured-in-place, meaning wheelchairs and other devices can smoothly travel over it with ease.
A ribbon-cutting for the playground was held in August 2024.
